Indian-Origin Techie reveals a game-changed interview strategy, Google Reacts | Deployment

A software engineer based in Seattle has attracted the attention of the Internet with his unconventional approach to interviews with acing coding. Sahil Gaba, who has been working on Google for four years, announced what he thinks is the best “resource” for job seekers. To his surprise, Google followed the conversation himself.

In his viral LinkedIn post, Gaba argued that candidates often misunderstand the role of interviewers. Instead of seeing them as a mere evaluation, he suggested that they should be regarded as valuable resources.

The interviewer: your best ally

“The best resource to crack a coding interview? The interviewer,” wrote Gaba. “Most candidates see interviewers as judges who are waiting to fail. But the truth? You are actually your best resource during the interview.”

He then explained how candidates can use interviewers to their advantage:

– Ask clarifying questions before writing a single code line. If you ask the right questions, the interviewer cannot help to fall some useful information.

– If you are stuck, panic not in panic. Free it as: “I think about approach A and approach B. I take a A because …”. This invites the collaboration without asking for direct help.

Gaba shared his own experience of an Amazon interview in which he had to deal with a dynamic programming problem. Instead of freezing, I went through two potential approaches and explained my hesitation to everyone. The subtle reaction of my interviewer to the second approach told me everything I had to know. “He remembered.” Always remember that interviewers are also people. You want to have an entertaining conversation and not just evaluate your technical skills. The best code you write in an interview is not the one you have prepared. It is the one you build with your interviewer. “
