Hallsville, Texas – a lot has happened since 1958.
Sputnik started, took over rock and roll and a man landed on the moon. But through all of this, Jimmy Hunt has never missed a football game in Hallsville Bobcats.
At the age of 90, Hunt was the definition of commitment and consistency. Regardless of weather, rain, snow or hail, he is in the stands and supports his team every Friday evening.
“Friday evenings will go to a football game somewhere in Hallsville, Texas, where they play,” said his wife Betsy Hunt.
Hunt Schloss his end in Hallsville in 1951, but his love for the game was not about personal fame in the field. He played football during his high school years, but admits that he was not an outstanding player due to his size and speed. However, his passion for sport remained steadfast.
“I played football when I was in the high school and was not a good player. I was too small, too slow, but I liked it very much,” recalled Jimmy.
In addition to football, Hunt was a staple in the community in Hallsville and served as a teacher of science, headmaster and finally deputy superintendent. Its influence extends beyond the school walls, since its presence in games has become a calming tradition for many.
“Everyone is looking for him on Friday evening, especially when playing away.
Outside of football, Hunt holds another long-term tradition of our daily visit to Buchanan's hardware store. Instead of the usual Café shop stops, Hunt grabs a cola and chats with friends and acts as an unofficial ambassador of the community.
“Well, that means that we will have at least one customer every day“ Buchanan joked. “He is like a PR figure – people come in and recognized him.”
For hunting, his commitment is more than just the love of the game. He hopes that his commitment is an example of the next generation and shows that success is not just about victories and losses – it is about effort, consistency and appearing.
“Try your best, “said Betsy.” If it is something you want to do and not something you are made to, try your best to see if you can get where you want to be. “
For the Hallsville Bobcats, Jimmy Hunt is more than a fan – he is a tradition.
