Laredo advocates continue to call the call to stop domestic violence after a fatal shootout

Laredo, Tex. (KGNS) – After the tragic shootout on Saturday, the supporters of victims renew their efforts to combat domestic violence in the community.

Norma Garcia, coordinator of the program for victim services of the LAREDO Police Department of Crime, said frustrated about the ongoing incidents, but emphasized that changes required a joint effort.

“Change begins at home by determining a good example,” said Garcia. “But too often we normalized the toxic behavior in our households.”

She pointed out how some people joke about unhealthy relationships and on a car sticker with the inscription “Tengo Hija Tóxica” (“I have a toxic daughter”) as an example of how harmful behaviors are sometimes considered normal.

According to officials, domestic violence in Laredo remains a serious problem. In 2024, the police received more than 7,000 calls related to domestic disorders.
