'Love Hurts' hurts to see – Massachusetts Daily Collegian

“Love Hurts” follows the story of Marvin Gable (Ke Huy Quan), a retired Hitman real gate who, according to his alienated brother Alvin “Knuckles” Gable (Daniel Wu), is reluctantly withdrawn into his criminal life, the life of his ex-Lawyer Rose is withdrawn (Ariana Debose) and sent Hitmen to him. The trailers presented the film after the conflict and romantic between Marvin and Rose when they kick Alvin against Alvin one last time.

The film is the first directorial project for Jonathan Eusebio, who previously worked as a martial coordinator for several Marvel films and on “John Wick”. Eusebio was supported by producer Dave Leitch, who headed “John Wick” with the direction of “John Wick” and headed “Deadpool 2”, “Bullet Train” and “Fall Guy”. The stage for the film was promising for the fact that the senior actors Quan and Debose are both Oscar winners.

However, the film earned only 5 million US dollars in the opening week with a production budget of $ 18 million, and he has to make a profit two weeks later. It was beaten up in reviews; Ben Kenisberg wrote in his article for the New York Times: “Sparks don't fly exactly.” The film was also described as “not inspired, impoverished and through and through unbound”. It received a “generally unfavorable” metacore for metacritic and only an 18 percent tomatometer number for rotten tomatoes at the time of publishing the article. So what went wrong?

As someone who watched the film, I can tell you that “Love Hurts” had all the necessary elements for a funny action comedy: a lovable protagonist who was thrown in situations, ridiculous excitement, including a B-plot romance between Marvin's depressed assistant Ashley (assistant Ashley ((assistant) ((Lio Tipton) and Poet-Slash-Hitman the Raven (Mustafa Shakir), a crime lord with a boba addiction that uses a boba straw to stab its enemies and fight scenes from Quan, the Jackie Chan-Inspored stunts in a suburban kitchen with Make a biscuit cutter as a weapon. Trivial when the fight scenes are exciting and the comedy is entertaining enough.

The problem, however, was that the film did not commit to be a comedy. Instead of leaning into his absurdity, it felt like it was holding back on how ridiculous it was, which it felt uncomfortable. It was often difficult to see whether a scene should be taken seriously or not to fall in love with Ashley and the romance of the Raven, shortly after she was half dead in the office of her boss. Or the dramatic swelling when Alvin appeared that demanded that they feel threatened by him, even when he sipped himself in the middle of his boba. The film tried to use these scenes for emotional effects without taking the time to develop them beyond the scope of a joke.

Another problem was the pace. The first act of the film was full of action – the first fight scene occurred less than 10 minutes after the film – that the audience did not leave any room to breathe. Then the second act entered, and suddenly there was a severe decline in the number of jokes or combat scenes, as the hours went with nothing but exposure award. There was no minute without a character of talking about an earlier event that influenced the action, which would not have been so bad if they had exploited the film's audiovisual format to show us the events that were told.

Although the story was built on the past story of Marvin and Rose, we always only have a look back at their past, and even then Rose told about it. The film has no chance of showing because he told you everything, and this did this in a mechanical and soulless way. As soon as the entire exhibition was complete, it went back to the fast -moving comedy without warning.

But what about romanticism? In addition to the action comedy, the film was also advertised as a romance, and the romantic relationships between the characters formed the core of history. Unfortunately it was also the weakest part of the film. A good romance depends on good characters, but the characters in this film felt flat. Even with the incredible amount of efforts that Quan has undertaken to make his character expressive, almost everything we know about his motivations – told us directly – either through the dialogue or by the narrative of his inner thoughts – without that in his actions. Rose got the even shorter end of the stick because she had no personality outside the archetype Femme Femme. Although Debose tried it, she could do little with such a flat dialogue.

The most terrible was the complete and complete lack of chemistry between the two. There was absolutely no sensuality, no touch or even longing looks at each other, and the only reason why we know that they are in love is her inner story and because she called him cute a few times. In fact, the secondary novel between Shakirs and Tipton's characters had more chemistry than the main couple, which is a problem when the love of the main couple drives history.

Eusebio would have been better to make another senseless action comedy that is not discussed on Valentine's Day. He has experience in choreographing fight scenes, and these were the most entertaining parts of the film. But he is obviously inexperienced to lead something else, most of all.
