Lufthansa Group achieves record income in 2024

In 2024, the Lufthansa group achieved a record sales of € 37.6 billion, which is due to an increase of six percent compared to the 35.4 billion euros of the previous year. This growth was driven by a higher range of flight, which made the most lucrative year in the history of the company in 2024. However, the group's operating profit (adjusted EBIT) fell from € 2.7 billion in 2023 to EUR 1.6 billion, whereby the operating margin decreased from 7.6 percent to 4.4 percent.

The decline in profitability was attributed to various factors, especially in the first half of the year. Strikes had around 450 million euros around the department for passenger Airlines, while a strong increase in the industry -wide capacity at the beginning of summer led to a decline in average yields. In addition, higher operating costs, especially in Germany, have a strong burden on performance together with delayed aircraft deliveries. The net profit fell less clearly and reached € 1.4 billion (previous year: EUR 1.7 billion), partly to lower interest expenses.

The Lufthansa Group passenger airlines welcomed 131 million passengers in 2024 and marked an increase of seven percent last year. The passenger load factor rose to a record of 83.1 percent. July and August was characterized by almost 88 percent in the history of the company. Nevertheless, the average returns fell by 2.6 percent compared to the previous year, with almost ten percent declining in the Asia/Pacific region. The revenue income (RASK) decreased by 4.3 percent due to high remuneration payments in connection with flight disorders, while the costs for the units due to strikes and inflation in fees, materials and personnel costs rose by 1.9 percent.

The group's passenger airlines reported an adjusted EBIT of 1.0 billion euros of € 2.0 billion in the previous year. Lufthansa Airlines recorded the largest decline in income by € 948 million due to delayed aircraft deliveries, increased location and personnel costs and higher compensation costs. In contrast, Swiss had its strong performance with an adjusted EBIT of more than 800 million euros, while Eurowings repeated its result of over 200 million euros. Brussels Airlines made his best profit with 60 million euros, and the Austrian airlines recorded an adjusted EBIT of 76 million euros.

Lufthansa Airlines is making progress with its turnaround program eight months ago to improve efficiency, reduce complexity and improve product quality. Early results show improvements in punctuality and regularity, with the subsidiary of New City Airlines playing a key role in the efficient activity of short -haul flights. The program is expected to generate a rough effect of 1.5 billion euros on EBIT by 2026 and increase to 2.5 billion euros by 2028.

Lufthansa Technik used the strong demand for maintenance, repair and overhaul services (MRO) and generated an adjusted EBIT of € 635 million. The company secured new contracts worth 7.5 billion euros and ensured sales growth and planning stability in the coming years. A new system in Portugal will open until 2027, which creates 700 jobs for repairing engine parts and aircraft components.

Lufthansa Cargo achieved an operating profit of € 251 million, which is due to a robust recovery in the Airfreight demand and strict cost management. The company benefited from a strong e-commerce business from Asia and shifted the freighter capacities from the North Atlantic to the Asia/Pacific region.
