Main Street in Torrington Back Open after a large gas leaf open

The road was closed for several hours, while the crews worked to find the source of the leak.

Torrington, Conn – Main Street in Torrington, is open again on Monday after a large gas leak, which disturbed the morning commuting for drivers and the morning rush for local companies.

The road was closed for several hours, while the crews worked to find the source of the leak. Joe Petricone, the owner of Petricone's pharmacy, was the first to call the leak.

“I received a call from one of my tenants who said she had a strong smell of gas,” said Petricone. “I immediately called 911 and drove down and hit the fire brigade.”

When Petricone opened his family pharmacy, the smell was too strong to miss it.

“As soon as I opened my car door, I could smell it. They could smell them here in the entire neighborhood,” said Petricone. “The levels in our basement were extremely high. In fact, they had to switch off the electricity for our building to ensure that there is no risk of exposure.”

Thirty minutes after Joe reported on the leak, Eversource arrived on site and started drilling holes along Main Street to find out where it came from. Her search led her directly in front of Petricone's pharmacy, where she spent a large part of the morning that contained and repaired the leak.

“This hole was the strongest in front of the store,” said Petricone. “There is an adjustment on the gas line that comes from the main line into the building. And there was a crack with this adjustment.”

Petricone's pharmacy has been in Torrington for 95 years and has previously seen similar situations.

“We had water breaks before the lead, where things were closed,” said Petricone. “It happens, especially in winter, where it gets very cold and it thaws.

Despite the road closure, it was still as usual for Petricone's pharmacy.

“The phone rang from the hook, that doesn't stop. We only did the best to take care of these people,” said Petricone.

The leak was completely repaired, the holes in the Main Street were patched and the Main Street is open to the drivers again.
