March Snowfall stops above average, despite the dry start of the year

It was a snow -covered weekend for the cascades. The Timberline Lodge reported more than 2.5 feet in the last 72 hours and Mt. Hood Meadows reported almost 1.5 feet in the last 2 days.

Already in January we had a long series of sunny days and a record strip. Although it was a dry month, we reported about the normal snow cover for all pools.

The Cascades had a good start in the end of the season at the end of 2024, which caused some resorts to open early.

Since yesterday, March 16, we have been above average above average for almost all pools.

For example, the Willamette basin is 114% of the normal value compared to 124% of the normal value in January, which loses only 10% in these two months.

The only pool that falls below normal is the Deschuts-Deschutes basin, which is 88% at 114% in January.

Compared to last year at this time, it looks very good.

The deschutes with hooded sandy-lowers had a deeper blanket last year, while all other pools are in better form compared to 2024 this year.

“As long as it does not melt too quickly, we should be able to fill up most of the reservoirs, and we should be able to have good irrigation water allocations for farmers,” said state climate engineer Larry O'Neill.

He says this puts us in a good position when we approach the running fire season.
