Meloni meets criminal lawyers, the need for reform – politics

Premier Giorgia Meloni had a meeting with representatives of the Italian criminal defense lawyers on Wednesday, in whom both sides agreed that the government had to progress its reform of the judiciary.

Among other things, the constitutional reform aims to separate the career paths from prosecutors and judges so that the judicial members can no longer switch between the two roles.

On Wednesday, Meloni also meets the Magistrate's Union, which is decisive against the reform. It would weaken the judiciary and the prosecutors under the control of the executive and staged a strike against him last month.

“We had a very detailed meeting in which we touched all questions of the constitutional reform of career separation,” said Francesco Petrelli, President of the Union of Criminal Chambers, after meeting the premier office.

“Obviously, we have invited the government without hesitation to the path of this fundamental reform, which gives the citizens the (right to a) fair procedure by (the number) of an impartial judge, as written in Article 111 of our constitution, but in reality was never realized.

“The reform does not affect the lawyers and it is certainly not punishable towards the judiciary. It affects all citizens and a more modern judicial system that is finally appropriate for liberal democracy.”

Sources said Meloni repeated the reasons for the reform during the meeting.

“Article 111 of the constitution tells us that” a fair procedure “in controversial processes between the parties, under equality conditions, takes place in front of an impartial judge of third -party providers,” said Meloni according to sources.

“A fair procedure takes place in front of a judge who not only has to be a third party, but also seems to be a third party.

“This is exactly what we intend to do with this reform, which provides for the separation between those who accuse, and those who guarantee a real equality of procedures between law enforcement and defense.”
