Mizzou Asce Kids Day 2025 // Mizzou Engineering

March 01, 2025

Mizzous chapter of the American Society of Civil Engineers (Mizzou ASCE) organizes the children's day to introduce K-12 students in the civil engineering.

For the second time in a row, Mizzou Asce organized the children's day and welcomed K-12 students on campus to learn more about the civil engineering.

“It is an opportunity for us College students to give something back to the community that supported us and inspired the next generation of engineers,” said Joella Melego, director of Community Outreach. “By showing children what civil engineers do, we hope to arouse curiosity and excitement about how the engineering shares shape the world around them.”

Students who took part in the event had to explore various areas within the civil engineering system, including geotechnical, structural, transport and environmental technology. For geotechnical demonstration, the students saw first -hand how buildings react to earthquakes. Construction projects for civil engineering have taught children how to build stronger bridges. The transport activity encouraged the participants to build safer roads. The research of environmental technology asked the participants to design a water filter.

Melegrito says her favorite was the event for structure engineering because it could see how the students were more excited than their bridges had more weight. But she also says that civil engineering is more than just bridges and streets.

“In civil engineering, it is about innovation, problem solutions and improvement in the communities,” she said. “Younger students have such a natural curiosity, and their enthusiasm for learning is inspiring. When we deal with them, we not only teach, we are also reminded of why we are primarily passionate about engineering.

“These children are the future builders, designers and problem solvers in our world,” said Melego. “It is incredibly meaningful to know that we could play a small role on your trip.”
