More Madera Co. inmates that were released to federal immigration officials this year than in all years 2024

Madera County, California (KFSN) – Federal civil servants are now facing the inmates when President Trump breaks through against the enforcement of immigration.

“It seems that the new administration has a increased focus on it and that they react a little more often to these inquiries,” said Madadera County, the deputy sheriff, Brian Esteves, on Tuesday to Action News.

So far, more Madera inmates have been released into ice than all years in 2024.

“This year we are up to 7 or 8 in contrast to just one last year,” he said.

The increased cooperation in prison corresponds to what Congressman Tom McClintock announced in an exclusive interview last month that the administration would first remove hardened criminals.

Lawyer Stan Santos believes that the implementation goes far beyond.

“The landscape has changed completely,” he said. “Now you don't even have to have this type of fee so that you can be deported.”

The California SB 54 outlines how the local authorities can work together with ice, which means that the occupants have to be condemned for serious crimes or sexual crimes.

“I can assure you that you have hit all of these SB 54 and these pre -qualified crimes for which you had convicted,” said Esteves.

Federal civil servants check the fingerprints taken in prison.

“If it is time to release them, let's let them know when we will publish this person and they will pick them up,” said Esteves about the federal immigration officials.

It will take months to know how the procedure affects the inmates elsewhere.

Officials in Fresno County say that they will present an update on May 20.

In Merced County it will happen at some point in July.

Speakers in the counties Tular, Kings and Mariposa did not deliver any action messages.

“The information comes from, so you may even find out a year later,” said Santos.

“So you can't rely on the numbers we are seeing.”

SB 54 was the first of its kind to restrict immigration cooperation between local and federal immigration when it became effective in 2018.

Now some local politicians are calling for reforms. These suggestions are still considered.
