Mother and veal right whales along the coast of Florida discovered

Wal, hello there! The excitement is in the air, since the right Walkatalog #3420, which is lovingly known as the “platypus”, was discovered with its second calf off the coast of Ormond Beach.

The 21-year-old right wing of the FWC Fish and Wildlife Research was seen on February 23 with its newborn and has marked a decade since her last veal season in 2015.

Both Platypus and their calf – together with catalog #3292 “Cashew” and their calf – were visible from the shore and delighted numerous visitors and residents. Thanks to several hotline calls, the researchers were able to react quickly and take photos to identify the individual mothers.

In the meantime, the right whales on Florida's golf coast were also reported. Catalog #3940 “Koala” and #4190 “Curlew” were spotted on February 23 before Pinella's County and will probably continue their trip to the south in the coming weeks. Boat drivers are remembered to keep caution and give them space.

The right whales are known to visit the entire east coast of Florida, with many sightings in areas such as St. Johns County, Flagler, Volusia, Brevard and further south.

The Marineland Right Whale Project and the Blue World Research Institute offer valuable resources and opportunities.
