Nach season tapes in New Mexico this weekend

The NMAA basketball tournament opens this weekend with top seeds, in which the first round games and championship games will take place in the pit next weekend

Farmington – The basketball tournament of the New Mexico Activities Association 2025 opens on Friday and Saturday throughout the state with the games of the first round.

A total of 40 games of the first round in girls' basketball will open the tournament on Friday, followed by another 40 games in boys basketball on Saturday. After this weekend the tournament will go to the Albuquerque region with games for the pit as well as the Bernalillo High School and the Rio Rio Rancho Events Center.

A total of 160 teams from all over the state will be in action this weekend, with half of those who are eliminated until the tournament is used on Tuesday.

Here you will find a preview of games in the first round in which local and area teams are involved.

Girl basketball, Friday

#10 Tularosa (13-15) at #7 Newcomb (17-11), 5 p.m. (class 3a)

The newcomb Girls Basketball Team will face Tularosa for the second time this season. The wildcats exceeded the Skyhawks last December last December with 40-15 tournament campaigns.

Sophomore Lethia Yazzie is the leading goal scorer for newcomb with an average of 13.6 points per game this season. Junior April Peshlakai won an average of six rebounds per game. The Skyhawks have a record of 8: 3 at home this season, while Tularosa is 5-8 on the street.

#16 Goddard (13-14) at #1 Kirtland Central (25-3), 5 p.m. (class 4a)

The Kirtland Central Girls Basketball Team, which is broken off against Gallup at home against Gallup, will try to open the State tournament against Goddard.

The Rockets are led by Junior Aubrie Bolanos, which achieves an average of more than 10 points per game this season.

Class 3a, #9 Hot Springs at #8 Navajo Prep, 3 p.m.

Class 5a, #12 Farmington on #5 organ mountain, 5 p.m.

Kirtland Central achieved an average of 63 points per game this season and only allows 36 points per game. Goddard, on the other hand, scores an average of 47 points per game and enters the tournament with a defeat of four games.

The Rockets travel more than 630 miles for this game in the first round. Kirtland Central has never lost to Goddard in three earlier games. The youngest was a 59-26 Broncos victory in December 2022.

#16 St. Michael (10-18) at #1 Navajo Prep (22-5), 6 p.m. (class 3a)

Navajo Prep took 61: 32 in last year's State Tournament in Class 3a and lost a game to the riders in four previous matchups. The Eagles won 17 games in a row, while St. Michael entered the game after they have lost four of their last five games.

Senior Elsie Odai (9.1 points per game) and Junior Gianna Sanchez (8.6 ppg) are the leading goal scorers for St. Michael, who have an average of more than 28 points per game this season. In their last 10 games, the Eagles scored a total of 555 points, which achieved an average of more than 55 points per competition.

Navajo Prep has a 9-2 at home this season, while St. Michael 3-7 is on the street.

#14 Shiprock (13-15) at #3 Portales (18-9), 6 p.m. (class 4a)

The RAMs won 16 of their last 18 games and last weekend in the District 4-4A championship game in the District 4-4A championship game an exciting 45:42 victory.

Portales is headed by Senior Myegh Banda, who achieved the player shot in the district of the district and at the same time corresponds to her season heights of 23 points.

The RAMs won nine games in a row and have a 3-1 record about Shiprock. The two teams have not exposed themselves to each other since 2018.

Portales is 10-3 at home this season, while Shiprock has a record of 4-9 on the street. This season, the RAMs achieve average over 50 points per game, while after 28 games, the chiefs score an average of 37.4 points per game.

#16 Piedra Vista (12-16) at #1 Hobbs (26-1), 6 p.m. (class 5a)

In the only meeting between these teams this season, during the tournament game last December, the Eagles Piedra Vista knocked with a score of 91-34.

Class 5a State Champs won 26 games in a row in 2023 and exceeded their opponents this season with an average scope of 39 points per game. The Eagles not only beat Piedra Vista, but also beat twice this season and also have a victory against the defending champion of class 4a State Champions in Kirtland Central.

The Panthers will make the 800 mile return and return trip to Hobbs, which has won 103 games together in the last four seasons.

#13 Cleveland (13-14) at #4 Farmington (22-6), 6 p.m. (class 5a)

The scorpions have met three times this season against the storm, with Farmington winning two of these three meetings. In the recent competition, the Scorpions were at home in the Scorpion Arena Cleveland 57-45.

The Juniors Savannah Madueno and Malia Moses scored an average of 21 points per game this season. The storm has lost four of her last five games this season.

The scorpions have a 12-2 record at home this season, while Cleveland is 6-10 from home this season.

Young basketball, Saturday

#9 Hot Springs (21-7) at #8 Navajo Prep (23-6), 3 p.m. (class 3a)

The Eagles have a record of 9-2 at home, while the Tigers have an impressive street record of 9: 4 this season, including an 11-point victory on January 24th in Ruidoso.

Hot Springs scored an average of 53 points per game this season, while Navajo Prep scored an average of 67 points per game, including 74 points per game during the current winning streak with eight games.

The game on Saturday is the fifth meeting between the two teams from 2011, with each team winning twice against the other. The most recent game in December 2023 was a 34-point scoring of the Eagles.

#12 Farmington (19-10) on the #5 Organ Mountain (23-5), 5 p.m. (class 5a)

Organ Mountain, who last year in class 5a State runner, after losing the championship game against the three-time state champion Vulcano Vista, a winning series of 17 games, including a perfect 10-0 mark in the district 3-5A competition.

The knights are led by a trio of seniors, including Lenny Washington, who has an average of more than 12 points per game this season. Ray Venegas and Ethan Pack also achieve an average of double digits per game this season.

Junior Emmitt McDaniel was an important contribution to the knights in the last weeks of the season, including 18 points with a great win of 3-5a against Centennial High.

This is the first game in the basketball court between the two schools. Organ Mountain is trained by Randy McBroom, who took over the head coaching square before the beginning of this season and replaces Rocky Gonzales, who has resigned for personal reasons.

McBroom set an impressive record of 182 wins and 138 defeats, including a trip to the title game of class 4a in Portales 2017 to 2024 before joining the organ Mountain.

The scorpions will travel more than 800 miles for this first round competition.
