New maps update bay area fire hazards for the first time in over a decade

They are the second phase of the update of Cal Fire cards. Last year, the agency updated its cards for the area of government responsibility, which a third of the state in which Cal Fire is responsible and protect forest fires. These new cards cover areas that are protected by local fire departments.

A common concern of the public is that these cards lead to your insurance company increasing your tariffs or changing your policy. A question and answers from the California Ministry of Insurance try to suppress these fears and indicates that insurance companies use their own cards – similarly but proprietary – to decide which real estate they will transfer.

While earlier cards only had two fire, these new three have. Houses that are now in “very high” fire hazard zones are subject to the new reasonable spatial requirements.

With the publication of these cards on Monday, cities and counties are required within 30 days to hold a public hearing and make them available to the public. Then you have 120 days to take over the cards with the ability to add additional protective measures and to put them in your local regulation.

The maps that cover the Bay Area and the north coast will be released two weeks after the publication of Cal Fire, updated cards for a large on March 10, with South and East California arriving on March 24th.
