New video, reports light on fatal motorcycle accidents in Goodyear

Scott Preston, a police officer of Goodyear, was freed from any criminal misconduct after running in the middle of a cross over Jacob Vela.

Goodyear, ariz. -The family of a Goodyear motorcyclist who was killed in an accident with a Goodyear police officer calls for the release of surveillance video film material from a petrol station that has shown that their beloved people have been killed and killed for months.

The film material published for 12NEWS shows a police cruiser who hits and kill Jacob Vela at an intersection.

The newly published surveillance cameras and the 116-page incident report by Maricopa County's sheriff office provides new insights into the fatal collision, which took place on October 22, 2024.

Jacob Vela's family has long asked to confirm whether the police cruisers' lights and sirens were activated when responding to an emergency that day. According to Arizona's law, the officials have to attract their lights and sirens if they go through a red light during emergency.

The video shows the Goodyear Police Cruiser, which approaches the intersection of Estrella Parkway and the Fillmore Street. At that moment, Goodyear Police answered a call about an ongoing attack. The cruiser activates his emergency lights, centimeters closer to the intersection and tries to make a left turn against a red light. Vela, on his motorcycle, collides with the cruiser when he tries the ride with a green light. He later died in the hospital.

Vela's son expressed the grief that his family endured in the days after the crash.

“I don't think everything you can say or do, ever change the injuries we felt, and the man we lost and what it meant for all of us,” said Jacob Vela II.

A report by the Sheriff's Office of the Maricopa County, which was published on 12News, throws more light on the crash. The report shows that Vela drove about 15 miles per hour over the speed limit when entering the intersection. The investigators pointed out the speed of Vela and the possible failure of the officer Scott Preston to activate the police cruiser siren as factors that contribute to the crash.

Body Camera film material from Preston and Officer Angel Pereida shows that the audible siren was not activated after the crash. According to the report, her body cameras were not eliminated before the collision.

After the inspection of the police cruiser, the investigators confirmed that the switch was involved to activate the noticial lights, but the siren was eliminated. Vela's son believes that his father didn't have enough time to react before the crash.

“Car accidents are accidents for a certain reason, but I don't think my father would have had time to just leave the video and see his speed how quickly the car came. I don't think I don't think, ”he said.

The report comes to the conclusion that the collision could be avoided if Vela drives the speed limit and claims that he had driven the cruiser with seven foot over the speed limit at 45 miles per hour.

The Sheriff's office triggered the officer Preston from a criminal misconduct and said that he had not ruthlessly driven and had activated his emergency lights and “possibly” his siren before the collision.

Vela's family demands improved police training to prevent future incidents like this. Vela's son expressed: “Everyone could have been. It was just my father. “

The family has hired a lawyer and plans to carry out their own investigations. It is expected to submit the intention to sue the city of Goodyear in April. The chief of police from Goodyear, Brian Issitt, had initially agreed to meet 12News to discuss the crash, but only decided to clear up concerns after all legal proceedings have been completed.
