Northern Illinois plans to move non-soccer programs to the Horizon League in 2026

Northern Illinois will bring his basketball and other non-football programs to the Horizon League in 2026 until a board of trustees is completed on Thursday.

The move is the result of Niu, which recently announced that it will take part in Mountain West as just a football member in 2026. By leaving the Mac in football, he had to find a home for other sports, although it was requested to keep wrestling and wrestling and the walfarts and keep gymnastics as daughter members of the Mac because the Horizon League does not sponsors these sports.

The entry fee for accession to the Horizon League does Niu costs 1.4 million US dollars in six annual installments.

It will not be the first time that the non-football programs from Niu have played outside the Mac. The Huskies left the Mac and became independent in 1986, and their non-soccer programs later joined the midwest Collegiate Conference while football went to Big West in the nineties. Niu returned to the Mac in 1997.

This year's NiU Männerbasketball team is a total of 5-22 and 1-13 in the Mac, which lacks the cut for the Mac basketball tournament. The women's basketball team is a total of 12-14.

The board of Northern Illinois has previously approved 2 million US dollars for an entry fee in order to join the mountain vest in football. The Mountain West pays the huskies an incentive payment to join the league The athlete. Niu also receives money to pay their exit fee from the Mac. The exact figures were reduced in the agreement, which was obtained by a request from the public records.
