NW OKC Apartment Fire Brigade Loss 13, including the family that is new in Oklahoma

A 3-alarm apartment fire in the northwest OKC drove 13 people on Friday morning, including a family who moved from Florida to Oklahoma last month.

The Oklahoma City fire brigade reacted to the Lakeside Village apartments near West Wilshire Boulevard and North Macarthur Boulevard around 6:20 a.m.

Shift Commander David Shearer said the fire drove 13 people.

“We just pulled here. We have just paid rent, ”said Rosita Collins, a mother of three with one on the way. “We are not from Oklahoma, so we don't have the resources, family or support to help us. I'm just angry. ”

Collins said she moved into the apartment four days ago after she had stayed in local homeless accommodation and her truck in the past few weeks.

After the family burned her new home, she experienced a short moment of relief when she found her car keys. The eldest son squeaked.

“I slept in the living room, then I woke up and saw fire on the roof,” the 11-year-old boy recalled.

His father, Jimmie Williams, said his son made him aware of the fire. Then he tried to get his family out and extinguish the flames.

“It was too much,” he recalled.

Somewhere on the way, someone provided Jimmie a few shoes in size. Before that, he spent the morning to walk barefoot.

The family said the Red Cross had offered a hotel for the next two days. Collins said the apartment complex told her that management would find a new unit as soon as possible.

The cause of the fire is examined.
