OT: Are football schools basketball schools?

Overtime or “OT” is an opinion column series in which the Collegian takes over national sports headlines or polarizing topics and gives them a butler-centered perspective.

The Iron Bowl has always been an iconic football rivalry between the University of Alabama And Auburn University. This rivalry has now reached the basketball court.

On February 15, Auburn defeated No. 1 AP No. 2 Alabama 94-85 In the first second showdown between teams No. 1 and No. 2 of the country.

In this game, a growing trend in college sports was highlighted. The SEC was historically known as the best conference in College football, but are now also considered the best conference in College basketball.

The SEC has most teams in the ranking AP College Basketball Top 25 survey from another conference. Eight teams in the second are among the top 25 and four of these eight among the top 6.

The ACC has been referred to as the best conference in College basketball for several years. The ACC currently has three teams in the top 25, and only one of these teams is in the top 10. This year the SEC has overtaken the title as the best conference in College basketball and the ACC was one of the worst. The ACC has the lowest number of teams that are equipped in the top 25 of the Four Conferences.

The rise of the SEC in College basketball is for several reasons, including ZEROPresent Realignment of the conference And simply more talents that commit themselves for Secl schools.

The Junior Accounting Major Sean Grove believes that the jump -Secler Schools in College basketball are in direct connection with NIL.

“I think the SEC schools made a conscientious decision seven or eight years ago to pour all of their money into football and men's basketball because that makes the most money,” said Grove. “Money talks in College sports, especially in College basketball for men and they were able to flood the system with money that they had never seen before and selected by zero.”

SEC schools are the Richest in the country and have most of the money for athletics, especially for football. Since football is so popular in the south and historically the main port sport in the Sec, the game in the trenches is the most money. The Revenue SEC schools that come from football are spent for the next most popular sport: men's basketball.

According to this model, it is no surprise that many of the best teams in College basketball also have great football teams this year. AuburnPresent FloridaPresent Tennessee And Alabama All have historical, well-known football programs and are currently classified among the top six in college basketball.

The rise of the SEC and the decline of the ACC in College basketball can possibly be attributed to football. In the last ranking for College Football season, the SEC had seven teams in the top 25. The ACC had only three. The constant decline in the ACC in college football as well as in basketball has negatively influenced its NIL deals, which contribute to the poor performance in the field and the farm.

The BIG 10 won last year OregonPresent USCPresent Washington And Ucla Whoever have all serious basketball programs. Oklahoma And Texas Were the only new schools that the SEC joined and their basketball programs are not so well known.

Sophomore Matthew Valdick, a double major for finance and business technology and analytics, believes that the realignment of the conference in the Sec has had a positive impact.

“If you have more talent in the big 10 and play each other, you will have more losses that make the Sec look better,” said Valdick.

With competitive basketball programs that join the BIG 10, the records of the teams are not so laid against SEC schools. Big 10 teams also have to deal with teams from Out West by traveling from coast to coast.

Brian Day, deputy professor of psychology and college basketball fan, believes that the SEC schools offer them athletes from the amenities.

“SEC schools have invested in dormitories, dining rooms and practice facilities for basketball players,” said Day. “You have been investing for football players for a long time, but ten years ago all programs made enormous investments in their basketball teams. Kentucky was one of the first when they only built players for players, and many of the other Sec-Schools followed the example. ”

SEC schools are known for having some of the best booster who donate money for their sporting programs. Tag mentioned that some of the same booster donates for football, also for basketball. However, the day thinks, no matter how much the SEC schools make an effort. Football is always firmly anchored in the south.

“I went south to the graduate school and it was different,” said Day. “Football has released everyone. Football will be there for a while down there. ”

One thing is certain that the SEC is currently the best conference in College basketball and it doesn't disappear so quickly.
