The previous record at the event was 1: 40.48 compared to last year. These are McDonald's first big 10 championships when he swam to ASU for his first two college years before moving to Indiana this season.

His swim this evening was his third time under the 1:40 barrier, with his fastest time by 1: 39.23 from the NCAA championships of last year, where he took second overall. With this performance, it is currently the 9th fastest performer in history. He also went to last year's PAC-12S, where he went 1: 39.35. This season is his time in the NCAA, behind Floridas Julian Smith at 1: 39.38.
