Parents speak against the release of the Dui driver who killed teen girl in Malibu

A Dui driver who deliberately beat and killed a 13-year-old girl while walking on the Pacific Coast Highway in 2010 could soon be released from prison.

The victim's parents found on Friday that Governor Newsom had rejected her calling for the early release of her daughter's murderer, 41-year-old Sina Khankhanian.

Now Ellen and Michel Shane are speaking out and looking for justice for their late daughter Emily Shane.

“She had no common bone in her body,” said Ellen on Monday to Ktlas Angeli Kakade and told her daughter's memory. “In my opinion, it is really no justice to serve a minimum for a hideous crime.”

After a two-year trial, Khankhanian was sentenced to 15 years in prison for 15 years-but the couple said that after only 12, he was entitled to probation.

Since then, the family has focused on keeping Emily's memory alive through the Emily Shane Foundation, and they have also tried to keep the man who has taken her life behind bars.

“He killed our daughter because he was in a state of complete trouble about control,” said Ellen. “The way he did 17 miles like a crazy man to target a car and kill a young child.”

Michel, Emily's father, said he was not convinced that Khankhanian is ready to be released.

“He will fall from the rails again, and I just hope that he doesn't kill a child,” said Michel.

Documents of the Governor Newsom Office show were proven on probation in 2023.

It was reversed later in 2023, but then approved in October 2024 – which means that its release could be removed months.

The Shane family said Ktla that Emily's memory will live on through her work with the foundation, and if and when Khankhanian is released, they will forget him.
