Police names who have fired weapons with hostages in fatal hotel shootings

Anchorage, Alaska (Ktuu) – The two officers who fired their weapons on Friday morning were named in the middle of a Swat situation in Midtown Anchorage, which moved the suspect.

In an update on Monday, the Anchorage police authority said that officer Tomas Franjul and Jordan Varak had fired their weapons and killed a person who had barricaded themselves in a room in the Hampton Inn near the corner of Tudor Road and C Street.

According to the police, Franjul has more than 13 years of experience with APD – after it was discontinued in October 2011 – while Varak has been in the group for about 3 1/2 years and was discontinued in June 2021.

Anchorage police say a person who barricaded herself in a hotel near Midtown early Friday morning after holding five hostages.

Five hostages – including at least one woman and several children – were involved, but none of the children were injured, said police chief Sean, said the case later in a press conference that day. The case was unable to confirm the severity of the injuries for the other adults.

The police still have to identify the man shot by officials.

Case said that a report on a “suspicious vehicle” led to several police officers reacted to the hotel shortly after 5 a.m., where they could contact one of two people in the vehicle.

The officials soon found that the other person had barricaded themselves with at least one woman and several children in a room and had triggered a callout to Swat, a crisis negotiation team, a technical support unit and a mobile intervention team.

APD said the interaction with the man finally led to “shots towards APD officials”, and the police shot back and killed him.
