Police officers are still looking for Newark Imams Killer, Videos Published

Newark, NJ – The authorities ask the public to help determine a “person of interest” in connection with the fatal shooting of a religious leader in Newark.

Hassan Sharif, 52, an Imam in the Masjid Muhammad Newsick Mosque, was found on the morning of January 3, 2024 with gunshot wounds near South Orange Avenue and the Camden Street.

Sharif was brought to the university clinic with several gunshot wounds. He later died of his injuries. The authorities stated that there was no information that indicated that the shootout was a bias crime.

Fritz Frager, director of public security, said Sharif was the Imam of the Masjid Muhammad Mosque for five years and campaigned for the non-violence in the city.

“He was a community activist who protested against gun violence,” said question. “He supported the efforts to protect our city. It is a deep loss that the city will mourn. “

The Essex County public prosecutor's office released an update on Monday, which in the case of video material of a “person of interest” shares (see below).

“Surveillance video shows a man in the region at the time of the shootout,” said the Essex County public prosecutor's office in a joint statement by the Newark Department of Public Safety.

“The individual has an unmistakable walk, which the investigators hope that identification will help,” added the authorities.

A reward of up to 35,000 US dollars is offered for information that leads to an arrest. According to the authorities, everyone can contact the tips of the Essex County public prosecutor under 1-877 TIPS-4EC or 1-877-847-7432 with information.

“This was a senseless act of violence that led the life of a loved one,” said Theodore Stephens II, Prosecutor of Essex County.

“We worked tirelessly to find those responsible, but we need the help of the community,” said Stephens. “We hope that the publication of this video will encourage someone with information.”
