Polk County Board of Commissioners appoint Shawn Smith as the new fire brigade rescue leader

Bartow, Fla. (March 4, 2025) – The commissioner board of Polk County appointed Shawn Smith on Tuesday, March 4, at the board meeting for the New Polk County Fire Rescue Chief. Smith was appointed Bill Beasley by Polk County Manager.

After a comprehensive career of the committed service for the department and the residents and visitors of Polk County, Smith comes into the role. Smith started his career at Polk County Fire Rescue in 2003 and started as a firefighter. Over the years, he has had many rows, including the driver/engineer, lieutenant/captain, battalion chief, deputy head for training and operations, deputy head of business services and most recently Interim Fire Chief. Smith has worked as an interim fire department since September 2024.

His appointment as chief of fire brigade reflects his commitment to the department and his extensive experience in both operational and administrative roles.

“Shawn showed an exceptional leadership and an unshakable commitment to Polk County during his entire term with Polk County Fire Rescue,” said County Manager Bill Beasley. “His experience and deep understanding of the department's operations make him the ideal candidate to lead PCFR into the future.”

Smith's appointment as chief fire chief marks the next chapter for Polk County Fire Rescue when he takes over the management of the U -Bahn size department. Under his guidance, PCFR will continue to concentrate on innovation, training and commitment to the community and ensure that Polk County remains one of the safest places to live, work and visit.

After 21 years with PCFR, this department is more than just a job for me – it is a family, ”said fire chief Shawn Smith. “I would like to thank the board for their trust and trust in me, and I am pleased, in addition to the incredible men and women who are this department to what it is.
