Pro-Palestinian protests break day after 9 demonstrators arrested at Columbia University and at Barnard College

Morningside Heights, Manhattan (WABC) – Pro-Palestinian protests broke out on Thursday on the campus of Columbus University and its subsidiary Barnard College, where nine people were arrested on Wednesday when the police expired a camp.

A strong and determined group of demonstrators sang on Thursday afternoon after a “Free Palestine” and against a NYPD presence on the campus.

“Today we are gathered outside of Barnard College today because a College of Columbia University yesterday, for the third time in a year that SRT sent to a campus to arrest student protesters,” said one demonstrator.

It comes about 24 hours after a chaotic scene in the gates of the Barnard College, in which NYPD officials were aligned in turmoil, and demonstrators in handcuffs that were physically removed from the campus.

Nine demonstrators were arrested and charged with the administration of the government, violation and disordered behavior. They were all issued and released.

“We saw violence on this campus by the police,” said a demonstrator. “This was reminiscent of something we saw on April 30th ago less than a year ago, with the Hinz -Hall Rate -Students thrown to the ground by the police.”

The security of the campus was tight all day after the collapse on Wednesday afternoon. All entrances to the Barnard College, with the exception of the main gate, were closed. On the campus, only students who presented ID were allowed to, and everyone who wore facial covers was denied admission, unless the cover was also carried on the ID.

“I actually live nearby and always come so often to tear all the anti -Semitic things,” said Avi light from the Upper West Side. “And it's a very hostile environment.”

The tensions have been boiled on the campus in the past few weeks after three students were shown for the issue of flyers with anti -Semitic pictures.

“So, this is the first time that Barnard College has identified someone for political protests, and we see increased oppression, especially in the Trump government,” said a demonstrator. “And yes, no matter what your thoughts have on political protests so that you are very, very dangerous.”

A smaller protest on Columbia's campus was preceded by the protest at Barnard's gates.

A spokesman for Columbia University said in a explanation that a group of people on the Morningide campus of the university near the low library gathered, with the protest lasting about 90 minutes. According to the university, courses and other activities in the entire campus lasted on Thursday afternoon as planned.

The NYPD prepared for possible disorders, but everything remained calm.

“I really think that has to be treated quickly,” said Lichtschein. “And the problem we see is that, as you know, you have shown some students and, as you know, created this. So if you take more measures, you will push back even more. It is not a cycle that can go on like this.
