Public schools of Duval County: Plan changes for the Middle, High Schools next year

The school district says that the new schedules are expected to save 8 to 10 million US dollars.

Jacksonville, Florida – Officials from the public schools in Duval County change most middle and high school time plans from the next school year to meet the budget restrictions, the district said in a publication on Wednesday.

Officials say that at the beginning of the school year 2025-2026, the district will pass from an eight-period schedule to a schedule with seven percent for most secondary schools.

The changes are made after a “thorough review of the budget restrictions and extensive stakeholder discussions,” the publication says.

The DCPS superintendent Christopher Bernier said that the goal of the new schedule was to reduce the costs without negatively influencing the services of the students.

“In middle school it is expected that it is in every academic class every day to improve the learning of the students in core subjects,” said Bernier. “In the High School, the schedule for seven periods will create a more balanced schedule for every four years with plenty of space for the credits required for completion.”

The school district said that the immediate cost savings of the new schedules are forecast to $ 8 to $ 10 million.

Here is a look at the most important changes in the schedule:

Middle schools

School officials say that the middle school students follow a schedule of seven watches and will visit the same seven classes every day.

High schools

The schools will operate with a 3×3 block time plan with a “thin” course, which means that the students each take three 100-minute courses for an A/B rotation and a 50-minute course per day for a total of seven courses. The shorter “thin” course offer is decided separately by every school, said officials.

Exceptions

The following schools continue to work as part of a 4×4 block plan, which means that there are four 90-minute courses for a/B rotation for a total of eight courses:

  • Douglas Anderson School of the Arts
  • Stanton College prepared
  • Paxon school for advanced studies
  • Samuel Wolfson School for advanced studies
