Romania starts criminal investigations against right-wing extremist presidential beginners-the Irish Times-

Romanian prosecutors said on Wednesday that they had initiated a criminal investigation against Calin Georgescu, the right -wing extremist front conductor in canceled presidential elections, because of several allegations, including the promotion of anti -Semitism.

The ballot was unlicensed in December for alleged Russian interference in favor of Mr. Georgescu, a strong critic of NATO and the western support of Ukraine. Moscow denied the allegations of interference.

After the elections have been abolished, the public prosecutor appointed a criminal investigation, under the allegations of misconduct, the campaign financing fraud and the promotion of anti -Semitism and hate speech to act against the constitutional arrangement.

On Wednesday, after they had questioned Mr. Georgescu for several hours, they officially examined him for allegations of forming an anti -Semitic organization, promoting war criminals and fascist organizations and communicating incorrect information.

Mr. Georgescu, who has contested all misconduct, accused the authorities of the behavior on Wednesday, which is reminiscent of the communist past of Romania.

“The communist Bolshevik system continues its hideous abuse,” said Georgescu on his Facebook account. “You want to invent evidence to justify the choice and do everything in your efforts to block a new candidacy from me.”

About 100 followers of Georgescu gathered in protest outside the public prosecutor's office in the capital Bucharest and calls “National Unity” together with ultranationalist members of the parliament.

The followers cheered and sang the name of Mr. Georgescu when he came out of the building. He will now be under judicial control for 60 days, a measure that means that he has to check in with the police at regular intervals.

The public prosecutor also said on Wednesday that they had searched 47 addresses of people and associations with Mr. Georgescu.

Among them was Horatiu Potra, a former member of the French foreign legion and military company in the Democratic Republic of Congo, whose security company Leibwächter provides for Mr. Georgescu. The public prosecutor said that a large cache with weapons and hidden money was found during the robbery.

In a contribution on social media, his communication team said that the authorities had submitted to Mr. Georgescu on the day he intended to take his candidacy for repeating the presidential election.

“Where is democracy now, where are the partners who should defend democracy?” The post read.

Members of the US government of US President Donald Trump have sharply criticized Romania to cancel his choice. The Vice President JD Vance said the cancellation meant that Romania did not share the US values, while the billionaire Elon Musk described the highest judge of the Upper Court, who was canceled the vote as “tyrant”.

“You have just arrested the person who won the most votes in the Romanian presidential elections,” said Musk on Wednesday on his social media platform X and repeated false claims that Mr. Georgescu had been arrested. “That's confused.”

Mr. Georgescu praised the fascist leaders of the Romania from the 1930s as patriots and martyrs and admired both for Mr. Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin. He remains the top election of voters in the polls in the run -up to the May, although it is still unclear whether it should run.

Romanian iron watch was a right -wing extremist movement and party, which was founded in 1927 and became known for political attacks and violent anti -Semitism.

According to today's Romanian legislation, the fascist leaders and the Nazi promotion are banned racist or xenophobic symbols and conduct a prison sentence, although cases have rarely made it before the election.
