Safety bite: Does the data protection officers of an app influence your decision to download you?

Apple introduced the data protection officers for apps to help people better understand which data can collect an app, including the data linked to them or used to pursue them on the Internet. When the labels were released in 2020, they put a precedent in the industry and were an important first step to raise awareness of data protection invasive apps. There are three main groups of what Apple describes as “data protection food names”:

  • Data linked to you: These are data collected by the app and linked to the identity of the user, normally for advertising or personalizing third -party providers. This can include the full name, the physical address, the e -mail address, the precise and rough location, the purchase history in the app, the browser history, financial information and much more. Apple requires developers to disclose this if the data can be linked to the user.
  • Data that are not linked to them: These are data that is collected, but not tied to the user, which is normally used for analysis to improve the product. Apple requires developers to process data in a way that prevents new identification and ensures that they cannot be traced back to a single user.
  • Data used to follow them: This is collected and used to track users via other apps and websites. Think of Google or Meta use the devices of a user to serve personalized ads in your respective apps. This information can also be sold to data brokers.

Public attention in relation to data acquisition tends to increase if a new blockbuster app raises data protection concerns but quickly gushes. We saw this with the start of threads a few years ago when users asked why the data protection names for the App Store contained data categories such as “health and fitness”. In retrospect, however, this had practically no influence on the growth of the service. Today Threads is number one for the social media service in the App Store. What raises the question: Does the data protection officers of an app affect the decision of a user to download them?

A great misunderstanding about the nutritional names for privacy is how they are determined. Apple leaves it to the developer to determine exactly and explain what the app can collect from its users. This gives the developers flexibility and probably holds the review process for the App Store, but there are some concerns about transparency and accountability.

What does that mean for users? Data protection officers are undoubtedly useful – if you know where to find them and how to interpret them. But just because they are declared does not necessarily mean they are implemented. Since Apple continues to position the privacy as a core value, the greater question of how it can work with developers to increase transparency, to better communicate the data practices and to overturn it just to cover their acesTS legal, accountable.
