Sahra Wagenknecht's party threatens the legal challenge for the German election result – politico

The party is now consulting legal experts for possible next steps. “We will legally check the matter thoroughly,” confirmed Mohamed Ali.

In the meantime, Wagenknecht remained vague about her future as party leader. “This is discussed in our management organizations and we will announce a decision in due course,” she said, refusing to rule out.

The result is a big blow for Wagenknecht, which the left party returned in 2023 to form its own party. While BSW was fighting, the left cut off better on the Sunday votes. The left guide Jan van Aken rejected BSW as a temporary phenomenon and compared it to the short -lived pirate party. “We won't even remember it in two or three years,” he said.

The contrast between the two parties underlines the difficulty that Wagenknecht is exposed to when developing a characteristic political space. Many voters who had considered BSW ultimately stayed with the left. Van Aken suggested that some disillusioned BSW supporters could return: “We haven't thought about it yet, but we will see.”

Despite the setback, BSW intends to continue. “This will not mark the end of our project,” said Wagenknecht.
