College Sports twisted team spirit with Signature Brews at games and food dealers

Milwaukee (AP) – Missy Vraney and Kristin Westphal did not go to Marquette. None of their relatives either. But their family tradition of playing Golden Eagles basketball games includes generations.

This has been the first season since Marquette has entered into a partnership with the third Space Brewing, based in Milwaukee, to sell Marquette Golden Ale-the officially licensed and common craft beer of the school at Golden Eagles Sporting events as well as in the space outlets in the third space and in the region. According to Laarkend, who managed sports sponsorship for over 160 universities and license agreements for almost 800 universities, 93 of the schools had license contracts for alcoholic beverages in the first six months of the current financial year. This is an increase of 57.6% compared to the 2023 financial year, when 59 schools had business for their own alcoholic drink.

The number of Larfield schools with license contracts, especially with Craft Beers, has more than doubled during this time – from 16 in 2023 to 36 this year.

Cory Moss, Larfield's President of Brand Management and Marketing, admits that he would have been surprised by this type of growth four or five years ago. Then he noticed more interest in the schools himself and from various local craft breweries who wanted to build partnerships.

“When the schools really stood behind it and the craft industry really took it seriously, it really started to grow,” said Moss. “And this growth was not surprising.”

It is a big change in the university sports landscape when you consider how many schools do not even sell alcoholic beverages at their sporting events not too long ago. The Southeasters Conference only allowed beer and wine at sporting events in 2019.

This change of guidelines has stimulated Tennessee and other SEC programs to get local breweries to start signature beers that could be sold outside the campus both in their games as well as in shops or tap rooms.
