Senator Hoitega celebrates the Fred Bear Day in Michigan

Lansing, me. – On Wednesday, the Senate passed a decision introduced by Senator Michele Hoitega, which was declared Fred Bear Day in Michigan on March 5, 2025.

“Fred Bear's life and love for nature are pure Michigan,” said Hoitega, R-Manton. “He taught us that hunting is more than just a sport. It is a attitude to life that connects us with nature and mutually. “

Bear spent a large part of his life in Michigan and worked through the global economic crisis for Chrysler and Ford Motor Co. in Detroit. Later he told Bear archery from his garage after the work he operated caught fire and left him unemployed. In the late 1940s, Bear archery had moved his headquarters north to Grayling, where it became one of the world's biggest archery.

“Fred Bear's legacy extends beyond archery. It became a cultural icon among the enthusiasts of the outdoors, ”says the Senate Resolution 14.“ Fred Bear's commitment to ethical hunting practices and protection has also inspired countless people to appreciate and respect the natural world. “

Bear died in 1988 and was immortalized by Michigan rock musician Ted Nugent in a “Spirit of the Wild” song from 1995, which bears his name. A bear statue was installed in Grayling City Park in 2024.

Bear once said: “When a hunter is richer in a tree with moral values and with the right hunting thread and experience, this hunter is 20 feet closer to God.”
