The death of the actor Gene Hackman will continue to be examined after he was found in his house in New Mexico on Wednesday.

The actor, his wife, the pianist Betsy Arakawa, together with a dog, were found dead by security officers in the neighborhood. The authorities found the couple on Wednesday around 1:45 p.m., as from a statement by the Sheriff's Office of the Santa Fe County.

Hackman had largely withdrawn from the spotlight, but had “deeply interwoven” in his community in New Mexico, said Jennifer Labar-Tapia, managing director of the Santa Fe-Filmburos, at a press conference on Friday.

“Gene was not only a legendary actor whose talent shaped generations of storytelling, but he and Betsy were also long-time residents of our community,” said Labar-Tapia.

We know the following about the death of Gene Hackman.

Gene Hackmans 'last event' was recorded more than a week before the Fund Body

Hackman's pacemaker revealed that “his last event was recorded on February 17, 2025,” said Adan Mendoza, Sheriff of Santa Fe County, during a press conference.

Mendoza said that it was “a very good assumption” to conclude that Hackman's “last day of life” was found more than a week before his found.

Mendoza said the “Today” show on Friday that he “is quite confident that there is no foul”, although the police “do not exclude”.

Tests negatively on carbon monoxide

Hackman and Arakawa have tested negatively for carbon monoxide, said Mendoza during the press conference.

The authorities found the actor in a mud room near his stick and rails, while his wife Arakawa was found in an open bathroom near a room heater, according to a search command.

A representative observed “body decomposition, bloated on her face” and mummification in Arakawa's hands and feet according to the arrest warrant.

One of the couple's German shepherds was found in a closet of less than 15 feet from Arakawa from Arakawa, while their other two dogs were found alive in the bathroom near Arakawa and outside.

Mendoza said to “Today” that there was no indication that someone moved through the house or did anything else. So it is very difficult to determine. “When the couple died at different times or together.

The authorities named deaths as “suspicious”.

Sheriff: Create the Timeline for Hackman Death 'Challenge'

Mendoza said to “Today” that it would be a “challenge” to create a timeline of her death because Hackman and Arakawa were “private individuals and a private family”.

“One of the things is in an investigation that we are trying to put together a timeline,” said Mendoza, that they usually work and go forward from the time of the “event”, but the investigators also plan to work “backwards” in the case of Hackman.

Two cell phones were among the objects found in the search for the Hackman house. Mendoza said that the investigators would try to access the telephones to get an insight into the past few days of the couple.

“We will analyze cell phone data, telephone calls, text messages, events and photos on the mobile phone to put together a timeline,” said Mendoza on Friday.
