According to the Portage Police Department, a shootout, who injured a person in portage, led to a patient situation in Lowell, which led to the arrest of a Chicago man.

On Monday, March 3, shortly after 4:20 p.m., the PD patrol officials of Portage PD responded to the 200 Block of the Greta Court regarding a report of a man who was shot. He was later learned that the shootout actually took place near the 300 block of the Jacobs Place, but the victim had been relocated to this second place by employees. On arrival, the officials were a twenty-eight-year-old Hobart man who suffered from gunshot wounds on his left arm and leg. The officials were able to use Tournique to stop bleeding until the Portage fire brigade arrived and took over patient care. The victim was transported to Northwest Health portage and then flown to a trauma center by Lutheran Air. The victim is expected to survive.

The first examination showed that this shootout may have been motivated by romantic rivalry and that the suspect was identified as a 27-year-old Jim Ferguson from Chicago, IL. Portage detectives were able to identify several locations in northwest of Indiana and Chicago, to which Ferguson could flee. These local law enforcement authorities were asked to look for Ferguson and received a suspicious vehicle description.

In the early morning hours of Tuesday, March 4, officials from the Lowell Police Department found the suspicious vehicle in a residence in the 1600 block of the Bluebird Court. A team of portage detectives and Swat officials reacted to this place to try to take Ferguson in custody. On arrival, two adults and a child voluntarily left the house and the officials confirmed that Ferguson was alone inside.

After numerous failed attempts to negotiate Ferguson, the rest of the Swat team of the Portage Police Department was activated and several houses in the region were evacuated. After about two hours of unsuccessful attempts to get Ferguson's handover, a chemical means was installed in the residence to get it out. This tactic proved to be effective, and Ferguson was taken into custody without further incident. Ferguson's vehicle has been confiscated and is recorded until a search command is issued.

Jim Ferguson is currently being held in the Porter County prison for severe battery and several active crimes by Lake County, in, without bond in the prison of Porter County. After checking the public prosecutor, the indictment for heavy battery may be subject to a change/improvement.
