Shooting near the Lorain Library makes concerns about youth violence.

Lorain, Ohio – A recent shootout near a Lorain library makes concerns about young people and violence.

According to Lorain police, a 14-year-old boy is recovering and another 14-year-old is custody after a shootout outside the main branch of the Lorain Public Library public library on Saturday evening.

The library was closed when the officials reacted to a reported shootout in the parking lot shortly before 8 p.m. on Saturday.

“You were upside down by spectators to a man who apparently experienced the chest/torso,” said the police from Lorain, Jacob Morris.

He said the victim was only 14 years old. The boy was brought to Elyria with serious injuries.

The surveillance video helped identify another 14-year-old boy as a suspected shooter. He was arrested and a weapon was recovered during a traffic stop.

“Fortunately, it is not very often that 14-year-olds are involved in shooting crimes. It happens. It is not necessarily unknown, but it's more the exception than the rule, ”said Morris.

The police said they are still investigating what has led to the shootout and why the teenager had access to a weapon.

It is a question that some asked in the community.

“It is a shame. It is a shame that you have weapons. It's just a shame that it happened,” said Bob Nash, resident of Lorain.

Others said news 5 that they were not necessarily surprised by the youth violence.

“It is reserved here, especially if you are in the hood. You just have to learn how to survive. And sometimes you do things that lead to such situations, ”said a young man named Willy, who refused to give his last name.

The police said that violence, especially young people, was alarming.

“It is a sign and a symptom that we have to be careful, and maybe some of our intervention efforts have to take place earlier than 14,” said Morris.

He explained that the department tried to have a positive impact on the youth, but said that it requires a community effort.

“In this situation we have a teenager – one is in the hospital and one in the detention. None of these scenarios is a great scenario for every child. And at the end of the day they are still children. There is a lot of potential that is still there, ”he said.

The Lorain City schools sent a message to the families on Monday, in which the situation from the weekend was explained. In the note, the district said that he would provide additional consultants for students and employees at Longfellow and General Johnnie Wilson Middle Schools. In addition, the district plans to increase the safety presence this week.

The shootout occurred while the library was closed and there were no employees or patrons there at the time.

In November, a man was stabbed into a non -provoked attack in the branch during business hours.
