Space day in Alabama Capitol declared

Montgomery, Ala. (WSFA) – The representation of aerospace and defense in the state capital shows only a fraction of its importance for Alabama's economy and history.

It all started in 1909 when the Wright Brothers opened a flight school in Montgomery.

Years later, in 1958, the first satellite that creeps up the earth became Huntsville.

“Alabama literally felt the effects of our state's contribution to the space program,” said governor Kay Ivey.

Now aerospace and defense is a billion-dollar industry. In 2024 Alabama A formed New Space Council In one attempt even more activity for the state.

“The space command belongs in Alabama, its lawful home,” said Leutnant Governor Will Ainsworth.

Previously, the secretary of the Redstone Arsenal Air Force in Huntsville was the best place for the headquarters of the space command.

The Biden administration has decided to keep it in Colorado, but Senator Tommy Tuberville said that a move to Alabama was still possible.

In the meantime, state leaders praise the industry that has flourished from Huntsville to Mobile.

“Alabama has built the most powerful rocket in world history twice, which we will continue to secure Alabama Aerospace and defense in the next 100 years,” said Ainsworth.
