Students at Georgia Southern celebrate Arbor Day

STATESBORO, Ga. (WTOC) – Students at Georgia Southern University continued their celebration of Georgia Arbor Day by planting trees on the Armstrong campus on Tuesday.

The 268 acres that make up the Armstrong Campus are classified as an Arboretum.

The trees planted today replaced others that fell when Hurricane Helene came through last fall.

University staff say the trees play important roles in our world we often don’t see.

“The roots of the trees, especially these big oak trees helps prevent erosion, as well,” said John Poston, Sustainability and Leadership Coordinator, Georgia Southern University.

Georgia Arbor Day is celebrated on the third Friday in February.

National Arbor Day is on the last Friday in April.
