Suspicious fatal chillum footstop had an outstanding arrest warrant against rape of the second degree

The Hyattsville police authority is investigating a fatal pedestrian incident that took place after a failed attempt at the traffic stop.

On the evening of February 28, 2025, police officers tried to stop a vehicle in Hyattsville. The driver initially stopped. But then fled the west on the east-western highway. The official followed Kurz, but ended the chase directly beyond the city line.

Shortly afterwards, the driver collided with a pedestrian in the 2200 block of the East-West Highway in Chillum, Maryland around 10:15 p.m. The woman was declared dead at the crime scene.

The official involved had both a body carried with body and a dashboard camera that was in operation during the incident and are part of the ongoing investigations.

The suspect, 23-year-old Warren Leonard from Washington, DC, was taken into custody. It was found that Leonard had an outstanding arrest warrant against rape of a second degree and was charged with the possession of a firearm after a pistol was discovered with an extended magazine.
