Teachers take contracts into account six months after shooting at the Apalachee High School-WSB-TV Channel 2

Barrow County, Ga. – On Tuesday, the shootout on the campus of the Apalachee High School was to mark the Barrow County community with the campus of the Apalachee High School.

Two students and two teachers died at the shootout: Mason Schermerhorn, 14, Christian Angulo, 14, coach Ricky Aspinwall (39) and Cristina Irimie, 53.

According to the Georgia Bureau of Investigation, eight students and a teacher were hospitalized.

“Healing is a process, and every day we have different feelings. I don't think someone heals something like that, ”said Dion Muldrow.

Muldrow is the director of bands at the Apalachee High School and spoke on Tuesday evening during the public commentary of the Barrow County Board of Education.

He told the board: “Support employees in this building do everything possible to ensure that our life is easier and our administration does our best.”

The organizer of a group called Change for Chee, Layla Renee Contreras, said that now it is time to increase time to heal teacher contracts.

“You have to do more to ensure that teachers do not use their illness,” said Contreras. “You should have more pto.”

Family members of the students killed by the shootout were in the crowd who observed the meeting.

“I got in touch with Mason's family and Christian's family and they go through roller coasters,” said Contreras. “That has been six months since they lost their family members. How do you go on? Not you. “

Teachers of the Apalachee High School are currently allowed to leave the campus for advice 90 minutes a week, according to the Barrow County school system.

During the meeting, the district employee informed the board of directors that they hired a clinic who was trained in trauma advice.

This is one of two people who are devoting themselves to the service on campus.

The staff said that the district was to stop the second. The district also works to hire a clinician who concentrates his time on the servants of teachers on campus.

The district also adds a recovery coordinator to the team.

In the last count, personnel documents state that seven employees have left the Apalachee High School since the shootout for various reasons. These range from transfers to resignation.

This is compared to five in the same period in the past school year.

“Apalachee is a great school,” said Muldrow. “We are working hard to ensure that our children feel good, and then hopefully we can support each other, and hopefully the support will continue to come to get better and better.”
