Security tips for gun owners to protect children

At least 1,262 children died of unintentional weapon injuries between 2003 and 2021 in the USA and Puerto Rico. The majority (85%) were killed in a house or apartment and about 38% were added, the agency said.

According to the CDC, in which the data analysis quoted violent death reporting system, weapons that were involved in the unintentional deaths were most often kept near bedside tables, under mattresses or pillows, in cupboards and in vehicles.

To protect children, the California Ministry of Justice recommends the gun owners:

  • Always store the unloaded firearm.
  • Use a safety device for firearms and save the weapon in a closed container.
  • Protect the weapon's ammunition separately in a closed container.
  • Do not store the firearm where it is visible.
  • Do not store the firearm on a bedside table, under a mattress or pillow or on a cabinet shelf.
  • Do not keep the weapon under other valuables (such as jewelry or cameras), unless it is locked up in a safe container.
  • Consider not keeping firearms safely and safely from the apartment.

Healthildren.org also recommends that parents talk to their children about weapons, including the memory of them, if they ever come across a firearm to keep away from it and to tell a responsible adult immediately.
