The Chinese woman comes from highly paid work

A Chinese woman made the unconventional decision to leave her lucrative job to pursue her passion for animals, to become a zooeeper and to find a feeling of fulfillment that she never experienced in her corporate career.

A Chinese woman with a postgraduate degree at the University of Cambridge left a prestigious job in a biopharmaceutical company to work in the Shanghai Zoo. The 25-year-old from the Jiangsu province claimed that her new job enables her to have a more active lifestyle and provide her valuable experience.

According to reports, the average monthly monthly income of the researchers was around 10,000 yuan (1,400 US dollars) with their employer, while in the zoo they deserve about half of this amount. She told South China Morning Post that she has no regrets about her salary reduction. Working in the zoo enables her to see animals up close, which helps her studies to treat pet food and diseases.

“Animals have many magical behaviors that develop from me through daily interactions,” she said with the website. She also noticed that her employment in the zoo made her “healthier” because she enjoys an active lifestyle and is no longer limited to an office environment.

The researcher has worked full -time in the zoo since February last year and takes care of elephants, hippos, monkeys, tigers and red pandas. She is currently taking care of deer and goats. Ma Ya said that animals continue to surprise them with their behavior.

She gave an example of an experiment in which the researchers examined a red panda to determine with which paw would use food to reach out of a box. Instead, the animal frightened her with her mouth.

MA YA announced her motivation for working in the zoo and said: “Apart from the feeding of the animals, I can carry out extensive studies on the nutrition of animals and illnesses. I would also like to improve my practical knowledge and complement the theoretical knowledge that I learned during my training.”

On the other hand, she explained that the animals in the zoo had taught their valuable lessons about the relationship with them as they respected their wild nature and their instinct. The parents of MA supported their professional decisions.

MA YA has a bachelor's degree in biological science from Imperial College London and a master in veterinary science from Cambridge.
