The enrollment of Syosset students grows and defies the trend of decline in Nassau County

Syosset Central School District

Despite the decline in student enrollings in Nassau County, the schools of the Syosset and Jericho remain two districts that cause this trend, with both districts rise around 9%. On average, the district has recorded a decline in the enrollment of students by 2.3% in the past ten years, with some districts such as West Hempstead recorded by 25% until a decline in enrollment.

Jericho has enrolled 249 additional students since the 2013-2014 school year, while Syosset 594 has enrolled.

Only 16 of the more than 50 public school districts in Nassau have recorded the enrollment of students. Herricks had the highest percentage climb and North Bellmore with 0.19%in 10.66%.

In the school year 2013-2014, 2,988 students were enrolled in the Jericho school district. Jericho had 3,237 students last year and showed an increase of 8.33%.

The district has five buildings with three primary schools, a middle school and a high school. According to the state, the largest school in the district is the high school with almost 1,260 students. The smallest is the Jeffrey Ratner-Robert Seaman Elementary School with 292.

The district offers a universal PRE-K program, a full-day program that started three years ago, said Denise Nash, representative for Jericho School.

The program currently has four classes, with a total of 72 students registered, said Victor Manuel, deputy superintendent for business matters. He said that the program with a total of 54 students should have three classes next year. The enrollment of preschoolers is not reflected in the state data 2023-2024.

Nash said the program was housed in one of the three primary schools in the district and changes between schools depending on the enrollment.

Syosset Schools enrolled 6,373 students in 2013-2014. The registration of the district decreased steadily by the 2015-2016 school year when enrollment began to grow. In the academic year 2020-2021, enrollment began to decrease, but increased the following year and then increased.

Last year the district had 6,967 students and marked an increase of 9.32%from 2013 to 2024. With almost 7,000 students, the class from 2024 has been the highest registration of the district in the past 20 years.

The district has 10 buildings with seven primary schools, two middle schools and a high school. According to the state, the largest school in the district is the high school with 2,265 students. The smallest is AP Willits Elementary School with 305.

The district projects an increase in enrollment and reaches 7,049 students in the 2026 class before a subsequent decline. The district said that projections could be influenced by the real estate market, which affects the number of families who get in and out in and out of the district.

Both districts have taken measures to record their growing class sizes, including Syosse's $ 143.81 million, which was adopted in October. With the approval of the bond, classrooms and learning rooms are expanded in addition to the repairs and safety improvements of the district.

The Syosset primary schools receive another 17 classrooms, new high schools and multi -purpose rooms. Due to its size and enrollment, the high school receives most upgrades, including an additional high school, a library, instructions and a robotic room.

The bond “will enable the district to manage its registration growth in safe, inviting, inviting and opposite rooms that serve our students and our community until the future,” said superintendent Thomas Rogers.

Although the schools in Jericho have not received any building extensions, Nash said that there is space for flexibility in the learning rooms. She said, classroom, which is originally intended for “specials” such as music training, could be transformed into the classroom every year depending on the registration.

By “maneuvering” the room, Nash said that the district was “able to absorb its growing population.

The two districts defy the trend of the enrollment from Nassau next to Bethpage, East Meadow, Garden City, Great, Herricks, Hicksville, Malerne, Merrick, Mineola, North Bellmore, Plainview age Bethpage, Port Washington, Roslyn and Valley Stream.
