In order to combat widespread illegal parking spaces to combat fire hydrants, the FDNY has given its first criminal summons after a fatal fire, in which a hydrant of the fire was blocked by a vehicle.

The FDNY commissioner Robert S. Tucker announced on February 28 that the ministry's fire department prevents a summons for criminal courts that led to a fine of 4,000 US dollars for a violation of the Brandkodex. The summons were issued to a person who blocked a fire -hydrant in a double fatal fire in the Bronx.

On February 12, FDNY units reacted to a fire to the Anthony Avenue. The fire quickly escalated to an order from third -party alarm. A parked vehicle blocked the next hydrant and primary water source, which was located directly opposite the fire building. Two people died in the fire, which was caused by a room heating.

The Bronx fire marked the second time in three days in which a hydrant was blocked by an illegally parked vehicle. On February 9, two vehicles hindered the two closest hydrants in another fatal fire in Brooklyn.

“Seconds count in an emergency, and blocking a hydrant is a selfish decision that can kill people and endanger the FDNY members when they work to save the residents,” said fire brigade commissioner Tucker. “After the fatal multiple alarm fire in the Bronx, our fire brigade prevention has taken decisive measures, and now we see the results. I hope that this significant fine sends a clear message to the New Yorker: Do not block a hydrant.”

Section 507.5.4 of the New York City Fire Code makes it illegally, inaccessible or not functional. This is the first time that this code was used for a blocked hydrant.

It is illegal to park within 15 feet of a fire hydrant in New York City. The New Yorkers are asked to contribute their part to keep hydrants clear. If you see a blocked hydrant, report it on telephone number 311 or visit the NYC 311 website.
