The New Investigation Avenue is opened to the crash of Washington DC

A subcommittee of the US representative house has opened an investigation by the military of airspace in Washington DC after the fatal collision between an American Eagle flight and a Black Hawk helicopter near Ronald Really Washington National Airport (DCA).

The cross -party body under the direction of chairman William Timmon and the Suhas Subramanyam ranking member will try to find out which measures the US military take to “ensure that the disasters of this kind will not occur in the future”.

In a letter to the letter sent to the Defense Minister Pete Hegseth on March 13, 2025, the supervisory committee asked a letter at the member level to determine a “list of well -known or alleged mistakes in the operational procedures that have led to the incident”.

The committee also requested information about the steps that the Ministry of Defense is undertaking to “ensure that military operations do not affect the security of the American flight”.

“Washington DC's airspace is one of the most complex and most regulated in the nation. DCA works within the densely controlled flight restriction zone (FRZ) and is therefore one of the most sensitive air spaces in the country, ”wrote the committee. “DOD plays a crucial role in the administration and securing of this airspace, with military aircraft often performing operations in and around the national capital region.”

The committee issued concerns about a potential misunderstanding between air traffic control and the Black Hawk pilot and why the helicopter -crew wore night vision glasses that “affected the peripheral view of the pilots”.

“Since the authorities continue to evaluate the circumstances of the incident, it will be crucial to determine all factors and ensure that reduction measures are carried out to improve future airspace security. In order to support the supervision of the committee on this matter, we will ask for a briefing at a member stage as soon as possible, but at the latest on April 1, 2025, ”added the committee.

Regardless of this, the US senators were increasingly loud about why the ADS-B of the Black Hawk was eliminated at the time of the crash, although the NTSB did not officially confirm this fact.

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) describes ADS-B is an “progressive surveillance technology that combines the positioning source of an aircraft, aircraft avionics and a soil infrastructure”.

On March 11, 2025, the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) published its preliminary report on the crash, which was confirmed that the “accident helicopter was equipped with a transponder that was able to transfer ADS-B out”.

Military flight crews are not forced to switch on the ADS BBBB of an aircraft under all circumstances.

In the report, the NTSB also gave a recommendation for permanent restriction of the helicopter process near DCA if certain runways are used.

The recommendations contained:

Prohibit helicopter on Route 4 between Hain's Point and Wilson Bridge when the Landenbahn 15 or the runway 33 is active at DCA.

Insect an alternative helicopter path that facilitates the essential air traffic, including law enforcement activities, patrols from the coast guard and the continuity of government operations, in the Route 4 segment.

The recommendations were taken over by transport secretary Sean Duffy.

The fatal crash occurred on January 29, 2025 at 8:50 p.m. local time when a regional beam from American Eagle collided in the middle of the air with a Black Hawk helicopter in the US Army.

Both planes then plunged against the Potomac river, which led to the loss of all passengers and crew members on board.
