The police decided in the fatal shooting of the armed suspect in Barstow

Two officers from the Barstow Police Department were legally justified three years ago at the fatal shootout of an armed man.

Victor Richard Carevic's shootout, 42, took place on August 15, 2021 in the area of the Monterey Avenue and the Armory Road, according to the public prosecutor of the San Bernardino district.

The repetition criminal had traveled with his girlfriend in a stolen car from Arizona when they had more petrol in a residential area in Barstow, the agency said in a report on the past week. A subsequent encounter with the police led him to swing a pistol against civil servants before they shot and killed him, according to the prosecutors and video recordings of the encounter.

The encounter

Carevic left the vehicle and his girlfriend in the 1000 block of the Mirage Drive when he was looking for gas, officials said. Before his return, the police arrested the girlfriend for suspicion of car theft and dragged himself to the car that had been stolen in Arizona.

The officer Steven Rodriguez hit barren when he returned to the area to search for the vehicle.

Carevic seemed to be “fidgety” when the officer spoke to him and continued in his pants bag, officers said.

After Rodriguez Carevic said that he was arrested due to the stolen investigation, the suspect allegedly pushed a shopping cart in the official and ran east in the Candlelight Street towards the Monterey Avenue.

The officer chased for Carevic and called the instructions to stop running and dig into his pocket.

Fired shots

“Seconds after the start of the chase, Mr. Carevic grabbed his pocket and pulled out a small, black, semi -automatic pistol,” the report said. “About a second after pulling the weapon out of his pocket, Mr. Carevic turned and scored the firearm at Officer Rodriguez.”

The officer fell to the ground when he tried to step out of the fire line and make his weapon unhindered.

“While he was on the floor, officer Rodriguez, Mr. Carevic fired several caliber rounds. The official reported that shots had been fired on the radio and were further checked.

The blood drops, which were later found at the crime scene, showed that Carevic had been hit by the shots.

Cpl. Anthony Buesa came to the scene when Carevic came to a nearby shopping center, with Rodriguez being persecuted.

“He observed how Mr. Carevic ran to the door in the Metro -PCS business in the shopping center. The door was closed, so Mr. Carevic revolved around Corporal Buesa,” said the report. “When Corporal Buesa left his marked patrol vehicle, he saw Mr. Carevic a small, black, semi -automatic pistol on him.”

Rodriguez shot Carevic, who fell to the ground, but, according to civil servants and video recordings, continued to fall on the floor.

“Mr. Carevic grabbed the weapon and then supported himself while holding the weapon in his right hand,” the report said. “He began making an application for corporal Buesa with the weapon, so Corporal Buesa fired a round against Mr. Carevic.” Rodriguez also shot an additional shot “almost simultaneously”.

The two officers could not throw the weapon away from the bleeding suspect and take it into custody, officials said. The officials and paramedics performed Medical Treatment, but ultimately died at the scene.

No injuries from the officials were reported.

Light crime history

According to the prosecutors and the records of the San Bernardino Supreme Court, Carevic had a long crime history from 2000.

Previous convictions included attacks that probably cause great physical injuries. Battery by emergency personnel; ruthlessly avoid the police; resist or hinder the police; Large theft; Maintaining stolen property; illegal firearm ownership; and possession of drugs for sale.

The DA's report came to the conclusion that due to the evidence of the use of deadly violence by every officer, “the right exercise of his right to self -defense and defense of others was and was therefore legally justified”.
