The Senate of the Filipino starts investigation in Dutertes ICC arrest | Rodrigo Duterte News

Imae Marcos, sister of the incumbent President Marco, leads the probe in the middle of political effects.

The Senate of the Philippines has announced that he will examine the arrest and handover of the former President Rodrigo Duterte to the International Criminal Court (ICC).

The “urgent investigation” was explained on Monday by Senator Imee Marcos, sister of President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. Dutente's detention and deportation last week built the country's political scene before the intermediate elections in May.

“It is essential to determine whether an appropriate procedure has been followed and ensure that its legal rights were not only confirmed, but also protected,” said Senator Marcos, who heads the Senate Committee on Foreign Relations.

“Our sovereignty and legal processes have to remain of the greatest importance,” she said, admitting that the arrest “deeply split the nation”.

The Senate has set a public hearing for Thursday and invited the police and other government officials to provide evidence.

Duterte is the first Asian former head of state to be charged by the ICC. He states that crimes against humanity, including murder, in connection with his so -called “war against drugs”, killed thousands of people in office from 2016 to 2022.

The families of Marcos and Duterte started a political alliance in 2022, which Marcos Jr. wore to the presidency, while Duterte's daughter Sara became Vice President.

However, the families have had spectacular struts since then.

The Duterte family asked the president's removal. Sara Duterte was charged with alleged corruption and an assassination attempt against Marcos Jr.

In one of the latest campaign attacks in front of the intermediate elections, the former President Duterte himself proposed to kill senators in a bomb explosion.

On March 11, Duterte was arrested at Manila Airport at Marcos Jr.'s command and handed over to the ICC. The Philippines, which the former President withdrawn from membership to Haag based in 2019, said that the step was associated with an inquiry made by Interpol.

Followers of Duterte carried out a number of protests across the country that demanded his release and return to the country.

Throughout the infighting, Senator Imee Marcos has followed a course that is largely independent of her brother, even though she is running for the interim elections for re -election of the administrative card.

Hours after the arrest, she had questioned the wisdom of the arrest of “poor President Duterte”: “This can only lead to trouble”.

Members of the Duterte family had threatened to hold their support for their re -election in the past few months, and surveys are currently indicating that they could lose their headquarters in the Senate on May 12th.
