The Sondheim Poster Book of Hirschfeld will be published this year

A new poster book entitled Hirschfeld's Sondheim will be released later this year. For the first time, Al Hirschfeld's art was made available by Stephen Sondheim's musicals, packed in an oversized removable poster book. The book also contains texts by Bernadette Peters and Ben Brantley.

Pre -order a signed copy of the book for USD 39.00. The books are signed by the author and the creative director of Al Hirschfeld Foundation, David Leopold. The book will be estimated on September 8, 2025.

Al Hirschfeld moved his first Sondheim show – West Side Story in 1957. Since then, Hirschfeld has captured almost all Broadway shows from Sondheim and several films with the composer's songs and scripts in his legendary, illustrative style. Sondheim was a Hirschfeld collector who received drawings directly from the artist and about his friends and employees like Hal Prince. In his last interview just five days before his death on November 26, 2021, the New York Times took a photo of Sondheim in his house with a picture of Hirschfelds that put it together in the background.

This first volume in a series of Deluxe Hirschfeld posters books, Hirschfeld's Sondheim, contains 25 of his art, which was drawn from the life before the opening night of Sondheim's productions. The pictures of Hirschfeld grasp the essence of the performances even better than the photos of the shows. All best-known plays from Sondheim are included-Weest Side Story, Follies, a funny thing that happened on the way to the forum, Sweeney Todd, happy and referenced, removable art prints in the park in the park with George-in 25. All pictures are scanned from the archives of the Al Hirschfeld Foundation. On the back – rare, side pictures from the archives and an introduction of Bernadette Peters, an essay by Ben Brantley and text by David Leopold, Hirschfeld's archive and creative director of the Al Hirschfeld Foundation.
