The Squale 2001 Dive Watch is back as a permanent collection

Squale is often seen as a kind of hidden jewel of the diving guard, a brand that speaks mainly to hardcore divers and experienced Aquatic Watch enthusiasts. The brand was created by Charles von Bestier in 1959 in 1959, which also brought in cases for several other companies (military fifty fathom watches), and thanks to its connections to famous discoverers and divers, including Cousteau and Mayol. In addition to the Squale-Master line, another model illustrates what the brand can do best: The Squale 2001, a barrel-shaped clock from the late 1960s, which was reproduced in Limited Edition for the 65th anniversary of the brand-and is now coming back as a permanent collection.

A vintage example for the Squale 2001 Dive Watch.

Last year, Squale revealed an appealing clock as part of his 65th anniversary, a loyal reproduction of the reference from 2001. This watch is particularly important for the brand because it is based on the historical model that the legendary Explorer Jacques-Yves Cousteau during the Antarctic Expedition from 1972 to Michel Laval, the first officer of the Calypso, the Calypso, of the Calypso Calypso, the Calypso, the Calypso, the Calypso, the Calypso, the Calypso, the Calypso, Calypso, the Calypso, the Calypso, the Calypso, the Calypso, the Calypso, Calypso, the Calypso, the Calypso, Calypso, Calyptso, Calmst Research. Compared to the square master in 2001, in a barrel -shaped case with hidden tabs and was the first o'clock that integrated the technology “Push to Release” so that the bezel could be blocked after the diving times were determined. A fixed watch with 100ATM water resistance and paved the way for iconic collections such as the Squale 2002 and 2003. The limited edition of the last year, consisting of only 300 parts, was a loyal reproduction of the model chosen by Jacques Cousteau with the same color combination black and orange Beel over a black dial.

This year the Squale 2001 Dive Watch is returning to the permanent collection of the brand in three new (and other) color combinations. Just like the Le from 2024, the new models reproduce the design and proportions of the original loyal and yet with more modern materials and mechanics. Therefore, the classic, well-protected, barrel-shaped housing retains its 40 mm diameter with a compact length of only 43.6 mm perfection. Now with a water resistance of 600 m, the housing is 13 mm thick. The crown is seamlessly integrated into the case and positioned again at 4 a.m.

In contrast to the historical bakelite version, the bezel has a single-colored sapphire glass use for increased shelf life. Just like in the 1960s, the bezel with a sophisticated “push-to-release” system is equipped with a security mechanism, with which it can only unlock in both directions with vertical pressure in order to ensure maximum security even if there are accidental effects. The dial is protected by a flat AR-coated sapphire crystal and the back is a fixed steel element that is screwed according to the housing.

Three versions of the Squale 2001 are now being published. The first has a black bezel with a bright 60-minute scale and a matt orange dial. The second keeps the same use of bezel, but brings a dark blue, dark blue dial with sun rays. Finally, the sand version is equipped with a fully shining bezel insert with a 60-minute scale made of black and matt black dial. On all three, the dial is surrounded by a white minute route, and all elements of the dial and applied markings-have a generous amount of Super-Luminova C3.

Inside the case, the ETA 2772 found in the original models was replaced by a Sellita SW200, a proven Swiss movement that is known as a great alternative to ETA 2824. It is used in its Élaboré version. It runs at 4Hz and stores about 38 hours of electricity reserve. Another very cool historical note is the return of a correct stainless steel bracelet with open ladder style links, which was closed by a modern folding cap. A very nice gesture that gives this already nice, vintage-oriented watch a lot of character.

The new Squale 2001 collection is available from the brand and its retailers 1.770 EURPresent CHF 1.490 or USD 1,590… not bad for a famous new edition with solid specifications and very appealing design. More details at www.squale.ch.
