The Sterling Heights police officer helps seniors after a strong snowfall

Sterling Heights (Wxyz)-The police officer of Sterling Heights Devon Leonard reacted to an incident in a neighborhood, she had no idea that she would be impressed by a seniors.

“I just couldn't go without helping. It's just not the kind of person I am,” Leonard told 7 News Detroit.

A hit-and-run driver had already considered the older woman's mailbox, and when Leonard contacted her to write out a report, she noticed that the woman's driveway was still full of snow.

During a conversation that was held on Leonard's body camera, the woman can hear about the snow on her entrance.

“I cannot clean the entrance because the snow is very difficult and I shouldn't go outside,” said the older residents.

Leonard quickly replied by telling the woman that she would “do a little” for her, but Leonard didn't stop there.

Although the woman said she had no snow blower, Leonard saw a shovel and went to work, cleared the strong snow from the woman's driveway so that she could get in and exit and get out of her mailbox.

“She was super grateful,” said Leonard. “I felt good.”

But the modest officer didn't tell anyone about her act of friendliness. It was only when the senior citizen, who was so grateful, wrote a letter to the police department about the special encounter last month that Leonard's colleagues from her shovel of the woman found out the woman.

Captain Mario Bastianelli said Leonard was one of her best officers, and her actions underline the work that so many officers do in sterling Heights and all over the country every day, which is not recognized.

“She didn't tell anyone about it. She made it easy and did it,” said Bastianelli. “Your actions illustrate the commitment and integrity of our department, and we are grateful for your service.”
