The student who shocked the reality of full -time job becomes viral: “wild”

A student has become viral after recognizing the hard reality of full -time work in America.

The Redditor U/SecurityImPossible50 shared its confusion in the “No stupid questions” about the vacation time and received 6,700 upvotes.

“Does a week vacation mean that you work the other 51 weeks?” They asked.

They continued to develop: “This is a really stupid one, but the concept is wild for me. I interviewed in a company in which you allowed 1 week of vacation. Does this literally mean that you cannot call no other days than 3 days of illness?

“I only worked part -time jobs because I am in college. I only notice how crazy it is to work so much just to pay bills and have no free time …”

PTO's reality in the USA

Compared to other industrialized nations, the United States offer some of the weakest employment rights in terms of paid leisure.

The Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) does not require that private employers offer vacation time and perform PTO guidelines entirely at the discretion of an employer. According to a report by Foothold America, some companies are, while some companies offer generous holiday guidelines, the national average for paid vacation 11 days a year.

In contrast, European countries with additional paid holidays usually offer a legal minimum for 20 to 30 days.

Robert Bird, Professor of Business Law and Eversource Energy Chair in Business Ethics at the University of Connecticut, told Newsweek: “Limited PTO encourages employees burnout. It offers employees the limited opportunity to detach themselves from work. Limited PTO also contains a healthy working life record between professional obligations and personal obligations such as caregivers for children or aging parents.

“This often falls disproportionately on women who shoulder the majority of nursing obligations in a family. Employees who are dissatisfied with their working conditions can leave and take their human capital with them.

“A revised employee may be physically present at work, his employer cannot be able to offer his best productivity and creativity,” he said.

Bird also notes that the US work law treats work as contracts between the same, provided that employees can negotiate a better PTO. In reality, however, employers have more negotiating power and can simply hire someone who is willing to accept minimal vacation. This imbalance contributes to some of the weakest employment protection in the developed world.

Redditors weigh in

The discussion triggered a flood of reactions, whereby many users expressly expressed how little leisure time received the Americans.

“Yes, that means. And yes, it's crazy,” said a user.

“To be honest, it sounds terrible. I work in the company environment and have 6 weeks of vacation, 5 sick days … and can always call sick if I need it. And not just being” sick “like some days that you just don't feel like,” said another.

International users interfered to compare their own experiences.

“This is wild for me. I come from Norway and in my company, you have 25 sick days and if you are sick for more days, you can really get a limit for sick days. You have a 100% salary for a year. If you are sick for a year, you will become some kind of advantages,” wrote a commentator.

“Not to brag, but I don't get sick days and I have to bring a doctor's note with me if I call sick,” complained another user.

“I worked in a place where it was 10 days of vacation + holidays, but I couldn't go on vacation for more than 4 days,” added another.

“Yes, from Spain when this thread is wild. Someone who points out that they have 2 days off as it is an advantage. It is the necessary minimum.”
