Tips to prevent the spread of bird flu

Upper Michigan, Michigan (WLUC) – When birds return to Upper Michigan, there are some things that the DNR says they should be aware of the spread of bird flu.

Brian Roell Brian Roell, DNR -Wildtiologist in Michigan, is rare in the songbirds, which means that you don't have to worry about bird flu in your back yard.

However, he says that Salmonella is a risk of bird feeders and that frequent cleaning recommends.

When you raise chickens, he suggests that you restrict your exposure to wild birds. Roell says you should never handle a bird that seems to be sick.

“The main thing for security for people, because this is a disease, although it is rare, it is zoonotic where it can be transferred to humans,” said Roell. “Don't deal with sick birds, especially without gloves or the like.”

Roell says that when you see five or more dead birds in your garden, contact the DNR.
