Trump says Canada, Mexiczölle, which is moving “forward” on schedule

US President Donald Trump confirmed that the tariffs proposed in Canada and Mexico were proposed as planned and, after a meeting with French President Emmanuel Macron, turned to reporter who emphasized the need for “fair competition” in retail.

The discussion between the two guides, which mainly focused on the ongoing conflict in Ukraine, took place in the middle of growing tensions, since Trump threatens both allies and opponents with new tariffs and prompted a number of negotiations.

Trump initially announced the introduction of tariffs of up to 25 percent for imports from Canada and Mexico, citing topics such as illegal immigration and fentanyl flow. However, he delayed the tariffs temporarily for a month so that the conversations can be continued. The break will end next Tuesday, and the question is whether the two North American nations can achieve agreements to prevent tariffs that could disturb important industries such as car production.

“The tariffs go on time on time on time,” Trump told reporters on Monday.

His comments came after Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum said that negotiations with Washington would continue this week to avoid the tariffs. She remained hopeful to make a contract with Trump, and even indicated the possibility of taxes for Chinese goods to achieve an agreement. Sheinbaum also suggested that Mexico could agree to an early review of his trade agreement with the USA and Canada before the period of 2026.

In the meantime, Canadian Foreign Minister Melanie Joly warned that the threat to tariffs remains very real and could survive for some time.

Trump confirmed his attitude that Washington was looking for “mutuality” in the trade relationships and said: “If someone accuses us, we calculate them.”

During her joint press conference, Macron called for fair competition and underlines the deep economic relationships between the United States and Europe. While Trump focused on trade in physical goods, Macron pointed out the important role of the United States as an important exporter of digital products and promoted more investments on both sides.
