Trump's criminal defense lawyer takes on a key role in the US Justice Ministry

ISTANBUL

The US Senate confirmed Todd Blanche, President Donald Trump's defense lawyer, as the new deputy attorney in General on Wednesday, who is responsible for monitoring critical law enforcement authorities.

Media reports said that Blanche had largely been confirmed in a 52-46 vote according to party borders.

Blanche, a former prosecutor who became a defender, will now manage the daily operations in the US Justice Ministry, including monitoring of the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, firearms and explosives (ATF).

His confirmation has triggered a controversy because his role in defending Trump defended against several criminal matters, in particular a New York trial in which Trump was convicted of falsifying annual reports. Blanche and Trump's legal team called the case of abuse of the public prosecutor.

During his hearing for confirmation in the Senate, Blanche said frustration about the legal battles with which his client was confronted.

“This is power, and that is the power that is corrupt,” he said.

He confirmed his position on the unfair treatment of Trump by judges and prosecutors, which reflected his attitude towards the investigation.

Blanche's move from private practice as a defender to a role of the Ministry of Justice has expressed ethical concerns from the Democrats.

However, he played down these concerns and said that his “legal relationship with President Trump” would continue to comply with his ethical duties in the role.

He also dismissed the fears that he would be exposed to moral or legal dilemma and said: “I don't think President Trump will ask me to do something illegal or immoral. I say that with experience and knowledge.”
